Mom: Five Habits that Will Make You Feel Better

1) Meditation- (See my Meditation blog post to make meditation easier) This will give you more energy, space to calm your busy mom mind down, and increased immunity so that you are less likely to get sick. Meditation helps you to fall asleep at night which again will help your immune system. It's also a great strategy to avoid eating when you didn't plan to. You do not need to meditate for an hour to get the benefits. Start small with 2 minutes and make it longer when you have time. I promise you will LOVE how you feel afterwards.

2) Walking in Nature- Wake up in the morning, don't touch your phone, throw on your sneaks, and go outside. If you can, walk towards the sun! Being in nature is such an amazing stress reliever, walking is great exercise. Taking a break from your phone and everyone needing something from you is so important. Finally, this will help to manage your internal clock so that you can go to sleep earlier and wake up with more energy (aka more time to walk). Try a short walk every morning for two weeks and see how you look forward to getting up.

3) Early to Bed: Our bodies are designed to go to sleep by 10pm at night. If we stay up past then, our brain thinks that it has to stay up later and it gets a second wind. That's why you may be exhausted at 8pm, but once 10 hits, you can stay up and watch that next show of your Netflix series. Getting to bed early is the best feeling, in the morning! You will have more energy and time to take care of yourself and those around you. Not only that, but your body will have better immunity (less time being sick) and you will have less stress. Sleep really is the best medicine!

4) Journaling: Do you know when your mind is completely filled with things you need to get done, you're worried about what one child who is nervous about their math test, and you're second guessing a decision you made at work? It's just a jumbled mess which causes you to get stressed out and snap at your husband, making you feel even worse. Journaling is the antidote to this problem. It's a chance for you to get everything out and organize it (similar to that drawer you need to clean out). When you take everything out it gives you space between your mind and the thoughts. Without all of these nagging thoughts, your mind is clear and you have more energy, because yes, thoughts do take up energy (especially the negative ones). See my What Do I Journal post for how to get started!

5) Intermittent Fasting: There are so many fad diets out there. Fasting is NOT a fad though. You do it every single night when you sleep. Our bodies need a break from the very difficult job of digesting food. When you give your body a break, you have more energy for other things. Fasting does not have to be a huge thing where you only eat one meal a day. Start by pushing your breakfast back an hour, or by not snacking in between lunch and dinner. When you are fasting, drink water (body temperature or warm is best). You will be hungry at first, but once your body gets used to it, the hunger goes away. You will not go hungry as long as you have fat on your body. Your body will just eat its own fat stores (which will help you lose weight if that's your goal).

How to get started?

Start by trying one of the above, the one that seems the most appealing to you, the one that's the easiest, whatever! Just pick it and get going. Then plan to do so 5 days a week or even 4. Give yourself a chance at success, then add on. If you need further motivation, you could join my accountability group or get some coaching from me to overcome what is holding you back and add even more accountability back.
