We all want more time. It is a valuable thing. We make money with time, connect with loved ones with our time, have fun with our time. We need more time in order to do these things, but there are only 24 hours in a day.
Just like with energy, it is time to assess our thoughts about time? Take two minutes (set a timer) and answer this question: What do you think about time? If the timer doesn't go off when you think you are done, ask again. I want you to empty your brain of all thoughts about time.
Look through your thoughts about time. Do you think your thoughts are helping you create more time or lose time? Here is an example of how we can lose time:
When you think something like, "there is never enough time", how do you feel? My guess, is stressed out. What actions do you take when you are stressed? I bet that you don't plan your day out, try to do too much at once, are short with your loved ones, and do not take any time to rest or give yourself some energy. When you do too much at once, what happens? You make mistakes that you have to later clean up, taking more time. When you are short with your family (especially kids), you end up having to put out a second fire, which takes more time. When you do not give yourself time to rest or recharge, you get tired more quickly, leaving you with less time!
See how thinking that "there is never enough time" leaves you with the result of not having enough time?
Let's try a different thought about time: "I will get everything done!". When I think that
thought, I feel determined. The actions I might take are to plan out my day in the best order. I will do one thing at a time and do it correctly the first time. I will be patient with my family members which will ensue a more positive reaction from them; things will run more smoothly. I will take breaks and do things like meditation to recharge my energy. The result is that I get everything done.
In both situations, I have the exact same amount of time, but I think about the time differently. Nothing has to change, but my thoughts.
I have to warn you: It isn't the easiest thing in the world to change your thoughts. We are so used to talking about how busy we are and how much we have to do. It's like, what we do as moms. If you fall back into the old pattern of thoughts, just take a minute and remind yourself that you have plenty of time or any other thought you like better. Here are some others:
I am in control of my time.
I have an abundance of time.
I have plenty of time.
I create more time with my mind.
All I have is time.
Time is on my side.
I get to decide what to do with my time.
I can manage my time effectively to get to do the things I enjoy most.
Can you think of any more?
To start changing your thoughts, chose one of the above and write it down! Put reminders on your phone for it to pop up every few hours. Write it on sticky notes and place them in your office, your car, and the bathroom mirror. Write it at the top of your journal each morning. Say it at the start of your meditation. Whatever works best for you! The more you place these reminders in your day, the better!
